Jacques Villeglé est un artiste français majeur de l’art d’aujourd’hui, âgé de 90 ans, qui dès 1949, a développé par la récupération et l’usage presque exclusif d’un matériau unique – celui des affiches lacérées trouvées au hasard de ses promenades urbaines – une oeuvre unique, foisonnante et d’une totale richesse formelle…
Depuis 1957, l’œuvre de Jacques Villeglé a fait l’objet de plus de 140 expositions personnelles en Europe et en Amérique, et l’artiste a participé à de nombreuses manifestations collectives. Ses œuvres ont été acquises par plusieurs musées européens, américains et africains. Mais ce n’est qu’à partir de la fin des années 1970 que Villeglé a pu vivre de son art. Il lui faudra attendre 1998 pour que le Musée National d’Art Moderne fasse l’acquisition d’une de ses affiches lacérées, et reconnaisse ainsi son oeuvre.

Jacques Villeglé is a French artist and “affichiste,” best known for his torn collaged works made from posters and advertisements. Villeglé’s work is representative of an obscured sense of cultural reference and the deterioration of civilization, with his densely layered surfaces suggesting social and political critiques through their appropriated imagery. “In the 1930s, the poster was called the newspaper of the street,” he explained, “something that really reflected society. And what I think I realized at the time was that the posters, as an art form, were always going to evolve and so there would always be something new to explore.” Born in Quimper, France on March 27, 1926, it was during a stay in Saint-Malo in 1947 when he began pilfering material from the city’s Atlantic-retaining wall for use in collage. Over time, he developed his distinctive process of layered advertising posters, offering a ripped and degraded conceptual survey of contemporary French culture that became an important influence to the Nouveau Realisme movement. Villeglé’s work is aligned with the Ultra-Lettrist movement of the late 1950s, stemming from his contact with the Lettrist poet François Dufrêne in 1954 who would also introduce him to the prominent artists Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely.

“I first went to Calais by accident, passing through it without incident—and continued to do so throughout the spring and summer of 2015. On journeys by train, ferry, car and bus—some slower than others—I became increasingly aware of the static tent landscape that occupies a belt of industrial wasteland on the city’s fringe. Sometimes flashes of colour, other occasions a drab and forbidding streak and then, one day, suddenly populated; The coach I was travelling on made an emergency stop to avoid a group of three refugees attempting to cross the motorway.
“Je suis allé à Calais pour la première fois par hasard, traversant l’endroit sans problème – et continuant de le faire au cours du printemps et de l’été 2015. Lors de mes voyages en train, en ferry, en car et en bus – certains plus rapides que d’autres – je me suis rendu compte de plus en plus du paysage de tentes qui s’étalait sur les friches industrielles aux pourtours de la ville. Parfois, des éclairs de couleurs, à d’autres moments, une trainée terne et menaçante, qui s’emplit soudain un jour de gens. Le car dans lequel je voyageais avait dû faire un arrêt subit pour éviter un groupe de trois réfugiés qui essayait de traverser l’autoroute.
It wasn’t until last August that I made a determined decision to visit; and with an American photographer and the help of a friend/contact at Médecins du Monde we arrived in the Jungle proper. The effect was galvanising. The degree of warmth, hospitality and trust with which camp residents received us amidst intolerable adversity was as disarming as the failure of the French and UK governments to address their needs (and the media’s tendency to either under- or misreport) was alarming. Since then I have returned on commissioned news assignments and am working independently on a wider project about migration, identity and borders in Grande-Synthe, Dunkirk and temporary camps or re-purposed buildings in the Paris region.”
Ce ne fut qu’en aôut dernier que je décidai de visiter spécifiquement l’endroit. Accompagné d’un photographe américain, je me suis rendu, avec l’aide d’un ami travaillant pour Médecins du monde, dans la Jungle même. L’effet fut saisissant. La chaleur, l’hospitalité et la confiance dont firent preuve à notre égard les habitants du camp, en dépit de l’adversité intolérable dans laquelle ils vivent, furent aussi désarmantes qu’étaient alarmants l’échec des gouvernements français et britannique à répondre à leurs besoins et la tendance des medias à ne assez ou mal en parler. Depuis lors, j’y suis retourné pour des commandes de reportages et je travaille indépendamment sur un projet plus vaste sur les migrations, l’identité et les frontières à Grande-Synthe, Dunkerque et dans la région parisienne, dans des camps temporaires ou des bâtiments assignés aux réfugiés.”

Valentine Goby is a French writer, born in Grasse (French Riviera) in 1974. After studying at Sciences Po in Paris, she spent three years in Hanoi and Manila, where she worked with humanitarian organizations helping street children. Goby published her first novel, The Sensitive Note, with Gallimard in 2002. For eight years she taught French literature and theater in secondary school before dedicating herself to writing and various book-related projects: workshops, talks, conferences, writing residencies at schools, libraries and universities. She currently teaches literature and writing workshops at Sciences Po. Her ninth novel, Kinderzimmer (Actes Sud, 2013) has won seven literary awards including the prestigious Prix des Libraires (booksellers’ prize) and is has been translated into Spanish, Dutch, Italian and Danish. She is also the President of the French Authors’ Council (Conseil Permanent des Écrivains).

Née à Cognac en 1963, cette artiste a suivi des études aux Beaux-arts de Poitiers, diplômée section environnement DNSEP à Strasbourg (école d’Arts décoratifs). Déjà passionnée par la photographie à cette époque, elle réalisait ses propres tirages : à la prise de vue, s’opère l’alchimie : celle de la couleur et des lignes, des jeux. Depuis, Fred Henry structure ses photos, les déchire, les façonne différemment. Elle joue avec les reliefs du support qu’elle a construit à cet effet : le sujet photographié se démantèle avec le pinceau, l’encre qui dessinent de nouvelles lignes et de nouveaux fragments. Les yeux s’égarent dans un nouveau paysage. Parfois une silhouette vient nous interpeller et nous transpose dans le tableau. Ainsi un nouveau regard nous est offert dans ces réalisations où l’on se surprend à s’évader comme dans un rêve…
Born in Cognac in 1963, Fred Henry studied art at the school of Beaux Arts in Poitiers and received her visual arts advanced diploma at the Ecole d’Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg, specialising in the environment. She began at this time to develop her own photos, discovering the alchemy of line and colour that occurs while shooting. Since then, Fred Henry has been structuring her photos, then ripping and reconstructing them. She constructs three-dimensional mounts for these works, dismantles her subject with the brush and draws in new lines and fragments with ink. The viewer’s eye gets lost in the new landscape. Sometimes a silhouette calls out to us and brings us into the painting. Thus a new way of viewing is offered up in these works, where we find ourselves slipping away as in a dream…

Photography has always been a part of Aurelie Prissette’s life. After studying photography as a history student, she joined a collective of photographers which allowed her to share, display and collaborate on projects.
Elle a travaillé sur l’univers de la scène, du tatouage et sur un journal intime à partir de photographies de son sac à main, et se consacre actuellement à une installation sur le thème de la mémoire et de l’héritage ainsi qu’à une nouvelle série sur les processus de création (De ces mains) et des portraits de fumeurs (Smoke). Elle reste fidèle à l’argentique et a présenté ses photographies lors de nombreuses expositions et manifestations.
She has worked in theatre, tattoo art, and on a personal diary based on photographs of the contents of her purse. Her current projects are an installation around the theme of memory and heritage, a new series on the creative process (“From these Hands”) and portraits of smokers (“Smoke”). She remains true to film-based work and has exhibited her photographs at numerous exhibitions and events.
Elle a été distinguée par le « Coup de cœur du jury » au concours La vérité par l’image SFR Jeunes Talents – Polka (2010) et Tatouage Magazine a publié un portfolio accompagné d’un article sur son travail (2012).

Born in 1957 in Paris, Marc Roussel graduated from the Ecole Centrale Nantes college of engineers. After short stints in the nuclear field and video production, he began his career in photoreportage (nine years with the Gamma agency before founding Orizon). His major themes are international policy, adventure and culture.

Laura Stevens (born 1977 in England) is a photographic artist living in Paris. She received her BA from Leeds Metropolitan University, before furthering her studies at the University of Brighton receiving a Master’s in Photography in 2007. Stevens has participated in group exhibitions at institutions including The National Portrait Gallery, The Centre for Fine Art Photography, Encontros da Imagem festival, the Singapore International Photography Festival with a solo show at The Latvian Museum of Photography and is represented in private collections. Laura is a Critical Mass Top 50 winner (2014), received a special distinction in the LensCulture Emerging Talents 2014, selected for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2014 and The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize 2013 and 2014.

Stevens’ series of narrative portraits often represent and fictionalise personal situations. The domestic landscape serves as a backdrop, using cinematic drama and painterly aesthetics along themes of intimacy, relationships and loss.
Les séries de portraits narratifs de Stevens représentent souvent des situations personnelles qu’elle transpose dans un monde fictif. L’environnement domestique sert de toile de fond tandis qu’elle met en scène l’intime, les relations affectives et l’absence dans une esthétique picturale et dramatique.
Alongside her dedication to long-term personal projects, she is a regular contributor to the press, for publications such as The Times Magazine, Le Monde, Forbes and The Washington Post.

Kantha bedspreads, throws and scarves made from reclaimed vintage saris. Women stitch pieces of their favourite saris, giving them a second life, and helping them find a new home on the other side of the globe. These pieces are traditionally hand made in Kolkata/ Calcutta in West Bengal and each piece is unique.
Ces couvres-lits sont fabriqués au Bengal en Inde; confectionnés avec d’anciens saris ce qui leur donne ce coté vintage, ils allient les tissus précieux et les imprimés floraux. Chaque couvre lit est une piece unique, cousue à la main.

Danielle Voirin grew up in a small Midwestern town near Chicago. Currently based in Paris, she shoots interiors, editorial and portrait projects. Whatever the subject, her aspiration is to create poetry from the evidence. Robert Frank articulated the feeling well, in the November 1951 issue of Life when he said, “When people look at my pictures I want them to feel the way they do when they want to read a line of a poem twice.”

About the Paris Blue Prints series
I wanted to slip back into that old dream, to escape into its soothing promises. To shift my focus away from the fear and worry of today’s tensions. The Paris dream was always there. I don’t remember when or why it started. I thought I must have lived here in another lifetime, but it doesn’t matter. It was a driving force. “I am here, and I want to go there.” When, where, or how, I didn’t quite know. I tried many different doors, and it was an unexpected one that pulled me in when I had stopped trying.
Je voulais me replonger dans ce vieux rêve, me fondre dans ses promesses apaisantes. Détourner mon attention des peurs et des inquiétudes du moment. Le rêve parisien n’a jamais disparu. Je ne me souviens pas quand il a commencé ou pourquoi. J’ai cru que peut-être, je devais avoir vécu ici dans une autre vie mais cela n’a pas d’importance. C’était une force motrice. ‘Je suis ici et je veux aller là-bas’. Quand, où, comment, je ne le savais pas vraiment. J’ai essayé diverses portes différentes et quand l’une s’ouvrit finalement, je ne m’y attendais pas, ayant cessé d’essayer.
Years after having transformed that wish into real experience, I have started looking back, trying to recollect what I was imagining and visualizing all those years ago, when living in Paris was my favorite daydream, before I had to navigate the bureaucracy, the language and the recent traumas, which I could never have included in the fantasy.
Des années après avoir transformé ce souhait en une véritable expérience, j’ai commencé à réfléchir au passé, à essayer de me rappeler de ce que j’imaginais et envisageais alors, quand vivre à Paris était ma rêverie préférée, avant que je ne sois contrainte d’en comprendre la bureaucratie, la langue et les récents événements, qui jamais ne firent partie de ma rêverie.
Those dreamed projections are still here, in parallel, and intertwined. It’s a question of sight, of decision, of choosing what to see. What does it look like, the undercurrent I feel running through both my present and the palpable past of this city?
Ces scénarios rêvés sont toujours présents, en parallèle, et se mélangent à la réalité. Il s’agit de voir, de décider, de choisir que voir. A quoi ressemble ce courant souterrain qui circule, en ai-je le sentiment, à travers mon présent et le passé perceptible de cette ville ?

Shannon Cain is a fiction writer living in Paris on a skills and talents visa in the arts. Her short story collection, The Necessity of Certain Behaviors, was awarded the Drue Heinz Prize in Literature. Her stories have also been recognized with the O. Henry Prize, the Pushcart Prize, and a fellowship from the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts. She was the executive director and fiction editor of Kore Press, an independent publisher of writing by women, and has taught creative writing at universities around the U.S. and Europe, most recently as Picador Guest Professor for Literature at the University of Leipzig and core faculty member in the MFA program at Bennington College.
In the last three years, Shannon’s clients have published eight books, placed 33 stories in literary journals; were accepted into two MFA programs; completed one postgraduate fellowship and won five national writing contests, including the Iowa Short Fiction Award.
